Full Yatra Route
Distance & Tonk Sequence
The Sammed Shikharji Yatra begins from Madhuban, the base village of Parasnath Hill, and follows a sacred forest path leading to the summit where Parasnath Bhagwan attained moksha. The total walking distance of the yatra is approximately 27 km (round trip), including ascent and descent.
The traditional yatra route passes through a sequence of sacred Tonks, each marking the nirvana (moksha) of a Tirthankara or revered saint. Pilgrims traditionally undertake the ascent barefoot, observing silence, fasting, and spiritual discipline.
Suggested Yatra Timing
Path to Liberation
Night Yatra
Many pilgrims traditionally begin the yatra late at night (around 12:00–2:00 AM). The cool climate, peaceful atmosphere, and minimal disturbance make it ideal for meditation and disciplined walking. Pilgrims usually reach the summit by early morning, offering prayers at the Parasnath Tonk before sunrise.
Day Yatra
Day yatras typically start between 4:00–6:00 AM, especially suitable for elderly pilgrims and first-time visitors. Clear visibility and better access to support facilities make this a comfortable option. However, walking should be completed before afternoon due to heat and fatigue.
Seasonal Planning
Organized sanghs often plan yatras based on season, group size, and physical capacity. During winter months, both night and day yatras are feasible, while in warmer seasons, night or early-morning yatras are strongly recommended for safety and comfort.
Recommended Fitness & Precautions
For a Safe and Disciplined Yatra
Physical Fitness Preparation
Pilgrims are advised to maintain basic physical fitness before undertaking the Sammed Shikharji yatra. Regular walking practice, light stretching, and stamina-building exercises for a few weeks help prepare the body for the long ascent and descent. Elderly pilgrims should assess their comfort level and consider assisted options where permitted.
Foot Care & Clothing
As the yatra is traditionally performed barefoot, pilgrims should condition their feet in advance. Carry basic foot-care items such as clean cloth, bandages, and soothing balms. Wear light, weather-appropriate clothing that allows free movement and maintains modesty.
Health & Safety Precautions
Stay hydrated, take short breaks at designated points, and avoid rushing. Pilgrims with medical conditions should carry necessary medications and inform group leaders in advance. Follow forest and temple regulations strictly, avoid littering, and maintain silence and discipline throughout the yatra to ensure both safety and spiritual sanctity.
